Lofoten Islands: The Ultimate Photography & Travel Guide

Few places on earth match the Lofoten Islands for sheer, jaw-dropping beauty. This archipelago of jagged peaks, deep fjords, and colorful fishing villages above the Arctic Circle has become one of the most-photographed places in the world — and for good reason.

Getting to Lofoten

By air: Fly to Svolvær (SVJ) or Leknes (LKN) from Oslo or Bodø. Several daily connections.

By ferry: The classic way. Ferries run from Bodø to Moskenes (3.5 hours). Spectacular scenery on the crossing.

By car: Drive north through Norway and cross the Lofast tunnel. Takes about 20 hours from Oslo — better to fly and rent a car on arrival.

When to Go

Winter (November–March): The most dramatic light. Long blue hours, potential northern lights every clear night, and snow-covered peaks reflected in the fjords. Cold and unpredictable, but absolutely magical.

Summer (June–August): Midnight sun, hiking season, and the famous Lofoten fishermen's festival. Green and lush, but no darkness for aurora.

Autumn (September–October): The sweet spot. Some darkness returns, autumn colors appear, and you might catch the first northern lights of the season.

Best Photography Spots

Reine and Sakrisøy

The most iconic view in Lofoten — the red rorbu cabin at Sakrisøy with the peak of Olstind reflected in the fjord. Arrive before dawn to beat the crowds.

Henningsvær

The "Venice of Lofoten" — a fishing village built on a series of small islands connected by bridges. The football pitch on the rocks with mountains behind is one of Norway's most recognizable photographs.

Offersøykammen

A relatively easy hike with one of the best viewpoints in Lofoten. Blue hour here, with the mountains and sky reflected in the glassy water below, is extraordinary.

Ramberg Beach

A long white sand beach with turquoise water and mountain backdrops. In autumn at sunset, the colors are unreal.

Stamsund

More laid-back than Reine, with a beautiful row of traditional red rorbu cabins at the wharf.

Practical Tips

  • Book accommodation early — rorbu cabins sell out months in advance in summer
  • Rent a car — public transport is limited and the islands are spread out
  • Weather changes fast — bring full waterproof gear and be flexible
  • The E10 runs the length of the islands — one of the most scenic drives in the world
