How to See the Northern Lights in Norway: A Complete Guide

The aurora borealis is one of nature's greatest spectacles — and Norway is one of the best places in the world to witness it. But seeing the northern lights requires a bit of planning. Here's everything you need to know.

When Can You See the Northern Lights in Norway?

The northern lights are visible from late September to late March, when the nights are dark enough. The peak months are October, November, February, and March.

Key requirements: Dark skies (no midnight sun), clear weather, and solar activity (check the KP-index at spaceweathernorway.no).

Where in Norway to See Them

Tromsø is the most famous destination and sits inside the auroral oval. But the northern lights are visible across much of Norway during strong solar events. I've photographed spectacular aurora displays from:

  • Trondheim – the city itself, especially reflected in the Nidelva River
  • Frøya – the open island with dark, unobstructed skies
  • Byneset – a peninsula just outside Trondheim with minimal light pollution
  • Orkanger – where the lights dance above the misty fjord

How to Photograph the Northern Lights

Camera settings: ISO 1600-3200, aperture f/2.8 or wider, shutter speed 5-15 seconds, manual focus at infinity, shoot RAW.

Composition tip: Include a foreground element — a lake for reflections, a mountain silhouette, or city lights. The most memorable aurora photos have context, not just sky.

What to Do if the Weather is Bad

Norway's west coast weather is famously unpredictable. Check yr.no for Norwegian forecasts and be prepared to drive 1-2 hours to find a clear sky gap in the clouds. The aurora forecast from spaceweathernorway.no is your best friend.

The Lofoten Islands for Northern Lights

The Lofoten Islands sit inside the auroral oval — the zone of maximum aurora activity. With dramatic mountains and fjords as backdrops, it's the most spectacular place in Norway to watch the lights.

Bring the Northern Lights Home
